Yoga seems to be the hot topic these days. Almost a cure-all for any ache or pain you might be experiencing. But how can yoga improve your golf game? Just ask Jack Nicklaus!
No, Jack Nicklaus does not do yoga – that we know of. But he does relate to the focus necessary to stay in the “zone” when it comes to his game. Remember when Nicklaus was putting for the win in a tournament years ago, and a dog ran out onto the course? Afterward he was asked by reporters if the dog bothered him at all. His response: “what dog?”.
In the zone. Nothing distracts. This is one of the benefits yoga brings to your golf game. In a great article by Daina Wasserstrom, she talks not only about the focus Nicklaus keeps to be the legend he is on the green, but how beneficial yoga can be for anyone’s game.

Yoga teaches us how to remain focused in the present moment, which can greatly aid the internal and external challenges on the golf course.” It’s that mind-body connection that every athlete needs to excel in their sport. Golfers also need flexibility, and that is one of the ultimate benefits to yoga.
Face it, no one is getting younger. One of the most common concerns in golfers is lower back pain. That constant swing motion coils and uncoils the spine, hips, shoulders which puts tremendous pressure on the body. There are yoga poses that can specifically target these areas and strengthen your torso which in turn reduces injuries and helps with club control. Yoga is more than clearing your mind and focusing in on your body. It’s teaching your muscles better flexibility, strength and control.
